Although it was in fact Autumn, you could have been mistaken for thinking we were in the depths of Winter. Arriving in the grounds of the stunning Wentbridge House Hotel in Pontefract at around 8.45am I jumped out of my car to retrieve my equipment and was joyfully met by Nicola and one of her bridesmaids who were grabbing some bits from their car. Rather unbelievably Nicola decided it was a safe bet to head out in her nighty – bearing in mind there was ice on the ground and the local flooded fields were creating a cold mist from the rising flood water.

It was a very cold Autumn day

One of the things I enjoy most about capturing weddings is the mixture of personalities that come together in support of two people on their special day. Spending some time during the morning with Nicola and her bridesmaids was a lovely experience – each one different in their own way but a joy to be around. During the majority of the weddings I have captured, the bridesmaids almost become part of your team – guiding you around the venue, being the point of contact to know when the important moments are ready to be captured.

As a photographer, certain things just stand out and present themselves as an opportunity. The moment I arrived in the car park at Wentbridge House Hotel I spotted the Folly sat on a grassy area to the side of the venue. Research suggests this is used for outdoor weddings, something that can never be guaranteed in our wonderful little country. After a brief chat with the couple it was decided that once the suns remaining rays vanish we would take an opportunity for a backlit portrait in the Folly.

The Folly really stood out for me upon arrival

I’ve photographed many weddings in many different venues but Wentbridge House Hotel really stood out for its modern decor and intimate event rooms. With stunning touches of green and fantastic decorative elements the venue really came to life ready for Chris & Nicola’s big day.

A wedding wouldn’t be complete without a little one running around and making his presence known, Lucas sure did that.

All in all it was a wonderful day, fantastic venue and great guests that I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know.
